Take your time and make the right sofa purchase decision for the New Year.

Choosing new sofas are something that almost all homeowner enjoy. They take enormous time and trouble choosing it so they want to make sure that it suits the setting in which it will be placed, as well as the demands the family will make on it.

If you go for a bright bold design – of which there are many to choose from these days – dressing it with simple plain scatter cushions is the best way to make it look elegant and stylish. If you choose a neutral colour, you can give it lots of different looks with the accessories that are available today.

Plain cream-coloured sofas can take any contrasting colour, and look great with some cushions and a throw. For example, an electric blue throw and scatter cushions in the same shade will look really eye-catching without costing too much. If you follow the same theme when choosing curtains and lampshades, your sofa will really make a statement. The same goes for a sofa in, say, grey or black; hot pink looks great with both these shades.

Throws are becoming very popular these days. They add a touch of elegance to a sofa but they also do double duty as a blanket on cold days. Matching one to match the scatter cushions is the perfect way of pulling a look together. Of course, you don’t have to buy a throw or cushion covers if you are handy with a sewing machine, knitting needles, or a crochet hook. A fabric quilt in colourful fabrics that complement the sofa will look perfect draped over the arm of the sofa, and it will be easy to make cushion covers to match. Another bonus is that accenting your sofa like this means that you can keep the costs down and, over time, vary the colours, should you decide to change the décor of the room.

Positioning the sofa in the sitting room is important, too. Years ago, before the advent of central heating, people would place the sofa as close as they dared to the main source of heat, which was usually an open fire. Central heating has changed all that; the benefit of having a sitting room with an even all round temperature means that the sofa can be placed against a wall freeing up the central space and ensuring that the proportions of the room are aesthetically pleasing.

Making the most of your sofa means that it will enhance the room that is your haven from the stresses and strains of everyday life, as well as seating you and your family in comfort.
