Interior design and home improvement should be a matter of choice and should reflect the ideas and personalities of the household residents.
Whether the household consists of a large family with children, a couple, a single occupant, or has old or young individuals living in it, there is always a vast selection of design ideas, colour schemes and of course furniture perhaps a
sofa or two that will suit all tastes and requirements.
Nevertheless a tricky household to redecorate is a large family household. Current society commonly considers redecorating and attempts to improve a home that has a young family with children and a pet as quite pointless. Many believe that when it comes to sitting, playing, sleeping and even eating no matter what the room that these activities take place in, it is destined to be covered with little dirty finger smudges on walls or paw marks on your beloved flooring and carpets. However with a little thought, a family home can be practical without forgetting the design features.
Firstly one must be aware of the new maintenance and basic practicality factors as you will need a decoration scheme that is child friendly. It might be a good idea to have a family room for everyone to relax in with a large comfy sofa and perhaps very little other large furniture. If space allows then a separate toy room or ‘den’ room may be a good solely for the children room, with perhaps a sofa bed to lounge on or perhaps for sleepovers even. In a home with young children, furniture and paintwork may have to be replaced quite often but it can still look clean and fresh with a little bit of effort. Sound, comfort and resilience are other factors you should bear in mind when you are deciding on finishes and furnishings for a family home. Minimal furnishing approaches with hard materials will result in an unacceptably high noise levels. Softer floor surfaces, such as carpeting, natural-fibre matting or rugs can be a good idea at upper levels of a house or on stairs, and particularly in younger children’s playgrounds and bedrooms where they provide the necessary comfort for floor-based play.
In some homes there might be a good room or sitting room that can be an adult’s relaxation zone when the kids are in bed. Although this might be a more formal room, it does not mean it cannot be used frequently. In any sitting room the key feature would be the sofa and comfy chairs. A lot of the time the room will be designed around the sofa with decoration to compliment and highlight the sofa. Good quality sofas are worth paying a little extra for, if you are however on a tight budget it is a good idea to check on the seasonal sales. Curtains and soft furnishings can be bought to match or contrast with the sofa fabric, colour and pattern, the lighting and wall coverings can reflect on the sofa and make the room appear warm and inviting, making your nights at home a little more relaxing and comfortable.
