Sofas With Intelligence

Intelligent sofas are the future of our living rooms

I find myself reading an article on the BBC News page, addressing the hi-tech home and smart sofas(amongst other items) that may come with it!

I can imagine my sofa being connected to my PC, and measuring my weight. I am not sure if this kind of thing appeals to my meager mind, but I must admit that I am intrigued, if nothing else, at the idea of having my comfy couch micro-chipped and connected to my computer. Then again, a talking sofa that will give you a verbal welcome, gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “Make your furniture work for you”.

As a person who is rather technically inclined the concept of a hi-tech sofa does tickle my curiosity tremendously. Gone are the days of merely having a comfy couch for, dare I say it, comfort! I am not sure when we have moved into the age where practicality must be introduced to even the simplest of luxury one can afford.

As I am not the world’s best housekeeper, and quite honestly I am not sure how I will take to my couch complaining about my weight to me, or my bookshelf literally creek and complain as the pile of Terry Pratchett books upon it grows. I may be inclined to deny myself the pleasure of owning said items.

That was my initial reaction to the article... But then I started thinking about the true benefits. The idea of verbal instructions on how to put a DIY flatbed item together will come in very handy when my hubby opens up the new parcel!

I must admit, again, that I am in agreement that a sofa is far less intrusive than a camera and that in the case of the elderly. Announcing expiry dates on medication is of utmost value, especially to the elderly who struggles to read at the best of times. Recognizing a fallen person who can not get up again is also a rather beneficial attribute, as is the waking of individuals who is lying in a certain position! At least we know that some of us will be receiving a helping [voice] hand where it comes to our snoring partners!

In truth, I am divided on my vote regarding this. On the one hand I want to smile and say “About time” on the other hand, I cannot help but wonder why we need our appliances to become smarter. Have we, as a race, become that dependant on our electronic helpers or just lazy?

As I read this, I realized that life just won’t be the same. Your comfy couch will have a purpose other than merely aiding you in becoming the world’s next couch potato.

For now, I think I will put that conversation with my sofa on hold.
