The longest sit-down

The world largest sofa takes to the streets to give people that much needed rest.
sofas come in many sizes, the largest of which would normally accommodate, say, seven adults but, from now on, the largest sitting room in the world would not be big enough for Anders Norgaard’s creation for BoConcept. On October 12 the Harvard Square Business Association pulled out the world’s longest sofa, so long that it has sixty-eight legs and weighs 2.17 tons, the weight of three family saloon cars. At 213 feet long it would comfortably sit 116 people but, of course, they wouldn’t all be able to join in the same conversation; the person at one end would not be able to hear the person at the other. A very comfortable family three-seater sofa measures around seven feet in length – this record-breaking sofa is the equivalent of thirty such sofas. It would make an ideal setting for a game of Chinese Whispers.
The world’s longest sofa’s important task on 12th October was to accommodate the thirty marching bands from the Honk! Festival, who paraded along Massachusetts Avenue to the Oktoberfest celebrations. The occasion must have been very stirring, with the band music accompanying the stunning red leather sofa as it was pulled out for its first public viewing in the USA.
The sofa was assembled in Denmark for the Aarhus Festival so it has obviously proved its worth. Danish furniture making is highly acclaimed so the finished result would be of the highest quality in both materials and workmanship, and a great piece of advertising for the bespoke designing skills of Anders Norgaard, who is a renowned furniture designer. His sofas and other pieces are made from the finest materials and are considered to be works of art. To have such a huge but useable piece designed by him is a great achievement. The finest leather would have been used and, because the sixty-eight legs would have to support its 2.17 tons of weight, they would have been made from one of the very hard woods, such as oak, mahogany or chestnut, which are high-density woods, perfect for such a demanding task.
The sight of the marching bands, all dressed in their finery, sitting on such a long and colourful sofa, must have been amazing. Record-breaking really appeals to people and to see something that was once just an idea in someone’s mind being brought to life in this way would be unforgettable.
BoConcept is Denmark’s most global retail furniture chain with studios in 45 countries so the quality of the finished sofa is undisputed. Although it was built to be a record-breaker, neither the workmanship nor the quality of the materials used would have been compromised by sourcing only the cheapest. It has already travelled successfully from Denmark to the USA and, no doubt, it will eventually work its way around the globe. There won’t be too many sofas of such astronomic proportions in existence, so it will be a popular feature for many events in the future. The good name of BoConcept will become even more familiar to people around the world.
This stunning piece of furniture will go on to break other records in the future, even collecting its own air miles as it travels from country to country. It would be wonderful if, eventually, everyone was able to say that they had sat on the world’s longest sofa.
