The best guidance on how to avoid your sofa from sagging!

What do you do if you have a really good quality sofa that is looking tired, saggy and tattered? Maybe you have had your sofa for a long time. Perhaps it was a wedding present or similar and you have formed an emotional attachment to it! Maybe it is an heirloom that has been in your family for generations and you have been entrusted with it. The good news is that you don’t have to part with it; the simple solution is to have it professionally re-upholstered.

Professional re-upholsters are craftsmen and carry out a very skilled job. First the sofa is stripped of its old worn coverings and any loose joints inside fixed. Loose springs and webbings are repaired or renewed if needed. Padding and seat cushions are checked and replaced if necessary. New fabric of your choice is then upholstered. Consequently, having a sofa re-upholstered will result in it looking as good as the day it was purchased.

What about the cost and is it worth doing? Re-upholstery is a skilled craft and so it is not cheap. Nevertheless, it will usually cost around half the price of a new sofa. Thus, if you love your sofa, find it comfortable and you paid a lot of money for it when it was new; it is well worth the money to have it re-upholstered. A further advantage of re-upholstery is that you can co-ordinating it with a possible new home design, by selecting new fabric to suit. You could even have a matching footstall made.

Depending on personal preference, one can choose from a range of fabric in traditional or modern designs, however it is advised to make sure you handle the fabric yourself first, this will prevent any unwanted itchiness! It is important to check with the re-upholster that the fabric used will have matching zips and threads. For example, black zips with red covers can look a little out of place.

Sofa fillings are usually foam, fibre or feathers. Foam is firmer and usually used for seat cushions whilst fibre is softer. Feathers are much softer and usually used for cushions. There is also the added option of mixing and matching fillings. This means you can choose the filling and decide whether to have your sofa and cushions made harder or softer depending on your own preference.

Most companies offer a guarantee so you should be able to get your money back if you are not satisfied with the work done. Therefore, it is clear that re-upholstering a sofa is a sensible cost effective option all round.
