A helpful guide to the latest must-have sofa fabrics and covers

Modern interior designers consider every aspect when producing designs for the modern home. Designs for sofas and chairs have become more interesting in recent years. Many interior designers go for the whole room approach and take a key piece of furniture in the room to build an overall design theme. There is an abundance of fabrics, colours and styles to choose from when purchasing sofas and chairs.

Sofas are available in modern styles made using modern fabrics such as ribbed velours, chenille, damasks, even silks and velvets. Leather as always is very popular but there are so many types and colours of leathers to choose from. Many bespoke handmade sofas use unconventional materials such as linens as Hessian; there is also a growth in reusable and recycled fabric such as coconut fibres and even crushed plastic bottles.

Designs, styles, colours and fabrics can be chosen by the individual, very often wall coverings, curtains and soft furnishings are also chosen in the same fabrics and colours. It is also possible to combine materials, perhaps leather sofas with fabric cushions or leather sofas with fabric trimmings and accessories. It is also possible to buy one off pieces or perhaps buy a sofa and a chair, traditional three piece suites are still available but most contemporary homes are smaller and require seating that is flexible and practical. It is often possible to purchase attractive sofas and chairs that will convert into beds. These space saving sofa beds are very useful in smaller homes and can be used to accommodate visitors with very little effort or cost.

Modern living and family life also dictates that we use materials that are hard wearing but are also easy to care for, it is great in a family home to have sofas with loose cotton covers. These covers can be removed and cleaned in the washing machine; the covers wear well and are also very practical whilst remaining stylish. Very often we have homes that have minimalist decoration but it is still possible to choose a sofa with bold colours and patterns. Leather sofas are also very practical and hard wearing, but they do require some care and attention to maintain their good looks.

Innovative and creative designs are available in varying price ranges from pure luxury to the most practical designs. The UK has a strong furniture manufacturing base, many UK customers have grown weary of cheaper, furniture that is mass produced and every piece looks the same. It is possible to find sofa and upholstery designers, just off the high street who will design and make bespoke furniture according to the individual’s tastes and requirements.

Modern fabrics are attractive and hardwearing, most fabrics can be treated with chemicals to enhance their appearance and improve their ability to avoid staining and wear and tear. It is vitally important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when caring for upholstery, but it is essential to care for the product on a regular basis. Within contemporary society, there are designs and fabrics to suit most tastes and it is possible to have very individual furniture at reasonable prices.
