Sofas get Mughal touch in India

A number of sofas have gone on display at a special exhibition in India


A number of sofas have gone on display at a special exhibition in India, based on the influence of the Mughal Empire.

The exhibition, held at the Tulsi Bhavan in Calcutta, had a wide range of furniture on display, with each piece intricately carved in the in the style of the Mughal era.

At its peak the Mughal Empire covered most of the Indian subcontinent and parts of what is now Afghanistan. The empire lasted from the early sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century and remains renowned for its fine woodcarvings and unique style.

Amid the wide range of designs on show the sofa sets that were meticulously carved to adorned wooden cabinets were of particular note. In addition there was also a variety of exotically designed cabinets, study table, dining table sets and room dividers.

'Along with a demand for contemporary and chic designs here, there is also a demand for high-quality designs with a royal look,' Basant Kumar Jha, a senior member of the organising committee, told the Calcutta Telegraph.

Following the success of the Calcutta show the organisers have announced they intend to hold a similar exhibition in Jamshedpur.
