When contemplating the set-up of a new house it is important to consider a number of factors in order to bring harmony to the home, a leading expert has said.
In his piece for the Sun Herald, top designer John Folding emphasises the need to consider line, colour, shape, texture and balance in design, and only through a combination of these will the house be harmonious.
In particular Folding expresses the importance of placing the furniture around the room evenly.
'Probably one of the more important elements in décor is balance. You don't want to feel lopsided when you enter a room,' he said.
'If you are creating a formal living room, symmetry is your king,' he added.
He also advised people not to be concerned about experimenting with colour.
'Be not afraid. Colour enhances our world, whether that is with light and airy ne utrals or bold and beautiful primaries.
'The most important point to remember when using colour is to take little steps. Start infusing colour in a room with pillows that can easily be changed or by painting just one wall or by adding an area rug,' he advised.
Folding concluded his piece reminding readers that harmony is ultimately achieved by combining the various elements of design in a way that suits the owner of the house, and not the way someone tells them.
