Good Mornings need Good Television

Morning TV is set to have a revamp. Your morning cuppa will never be the same again!

Daytime TV has been a staple for the viewing public for many years. The most popular shows are probably the morning ‘magazine’ type programmes that cover a vast range of subjects in bite-sized pieces. The viewers’ main requirement when they sit on their sofas, with that all-important cup of tea or coffee, is to be able to watch morning television that maintains their interest.

The current economic downturn is having an effect in many ways, not least on the costs of running television stations and finding ways to appeal to all age groups. Morning TV is one section of television that really does have to keep up with the times and the ever-changing expectations of viewers. If it becomes too staid and boring, the audience will turn off and look elsewhere. Morning TV is unlike most other areas of television because it has to cover serious subjects such as current affairs and the weather, as well as offer entertainment, to keep the viewing figures high.

Along with the planning and production, those in charge of morning TV have to ensure that their shows are visually attractive and, in this respect, their sets are of paramount importance. They want the viewer to feel ‘at home’ while they are watching and the best way to do this is to recreate that comfortable ‘sitting-room’ feel to their sets. Tastes in furniture and décor change as fast as those in fashion clothing, so the furniture and props need to be kept as ‘on-trend’ as possible.

Programme presenters, of course, are as important as the sets and items featured on the shows. As in all areas of the media, presenters come in and out of the nation’s favour, and one who is very popular one season, may be less so the next. Programme planners need to keep this in mind as well. The presenters themselves have to inject a lively tone to their topics, keeping the audience engaged. This will involve covering a wide spectrum of issues. As well as the latest news and weather bulletins, they need to keep abreast of the latest television programmes and, also, the most talked-about celebrities, music and fashion. Competitions feature heavily in morning television; these help to make an audience feel involved in the programme, along with phone-ins on various subjects, including health and dieting.

Television today is continually evolving to keep pace with a demanding public, and morning television is an area that needs to be kept as current as possible.
