Patterned Fabric Sofas

Here at SofaSofa, we’re not averse to a bit of pattern. In fact, we love it - on everything from sofas to shower curtains. From stripes to spots, and florals to fleur de lys – we’re fans of all of them!

Many people are a little bit afraid of pattern and tend to stick to either block colour or neutral fabrics like plain leather or suede. While these are perfect for teaming with patterned walls or bold and bright accessories, a patterned fabric sofa can pack a real punch in the style department and make a sophisticated addition to any room.

Decorating with Pattern

We have been become so accustomed to decorating with plains that the use of patterns may at first seem daunting.

On the face of it plain seems so much easier to coordinate than patterns, and although teaming stripes or florals with plains is pretty straight forward, can you team a patterned sofa with a patterned wall? A stripe with a floral? Of course you can! Pattern is actually easier to decorate with than you might imagine and you can mix and match patterns, colours and textures quite easily – just look for tones that are in the same colour palette so that everything works together nicely.

Consider combining a bold and bright patterned fabric sofa with a subtly patterned wallpaper . As an example, the sofa above would work brilliantly against a paper with a thick, subtle stripe in the same kind of colour palette. If you’d rather something a little bit bolder and brighter, use contrasting  colours  such as yellows and greys

If you want your sofa to be the star of the show, push it against a neutral wall. Not necessarily a white wall, but something like pale grey, taupe or cream. The pattern will really pop. If you’d rather the sofa work as part of the full scheme, use cushions, throws and paper with plenty of warm tones to create a cosy look that’d work brilliantly in a snug or family room.

Choosing a Pattern

When it comes to patterns, if in doubt, your best bet is always to choose a so-subtle-it’s-not-really-that-noticeable pattern, or, a pattern that’s in a similar colour to the base hue of the sofa. You can then go a little bit wilder with the accessories you choose – a big fluffy cushion, a floral throw, or a bright splashy wallpaper.

A classic floral, damask or fleur de lys will remain elegant and  utterly timeless – great if you’re a traditionalist looking for something for the long term. If you’re a little more fashion orientated and just want to have fun with colour, there are some very bold patterned patchwork sofas out there at the moment and because they’re so colourful, luckily, you can team them with virtually any other accent colour.

Savvy Shapes

The shape of the sofa is also really important when considering patterned fabric.  Remember the larger the pattern the larger the sofa you will need to carry it off. A big floral pattern or thick stripe will probably only work on large cushions and therefore a large sofa. Equally, small spots and motifs are best left for smaller chairs or love seats and go brilliantly as complementary pieces with a larger sofa in a larger pattern.

  • I really want a contemporary floral print loose cover but the sofa I like has only plains.
